First off, a big thanks everyone who came out last week to listen to Dr. Quick! It was a very interesting talk! To those who couldn't make it, we hope you can come to our LAST meeting!

Our last speaker for this year will be Dr. Ite Laird-Offringa, an Associate Professor from the Keck School of Medicine (http://www.usc.edu/programs/pibbs/site/faculty/lairdoffringa_i.htm).
Dr. Laird will be presenting on her research with a talk entitled: "Genome Censorship: Epigenetic Control of Cell Fate" this Thursday (4/21), at 8:00 p.m. at GFS 109, and will also be speaking about other research happening at the Health Sciences Campus, so you won't want to miss out! Please try to make it out that night! We will be having free milk and cookies, too!

Also, we'd like to remind everyone that applications for next year's e-board are due next Monday, 4/25, at 5pm. You may bring a copy of your application and CV to us during Thursday's meeting, or send the files to us at uscphisigma@gmail.com. We look forward to learning more about you and your vision for Phi Sigma!

Hello everyone!

Hope you have all had a great start to our third-to-last week of school! We are excited to announce that Dr. Michael Quick will be speaking for us this week! Here are the details of the meeting:

When: Thursday, April 14, at 8 p.m.

What: "From self-stimulating rats to knock-out mice: what they tell us about drugs, drug abuse, and addiction"

Dr. Quick is the Executive Vice-Provost and a Professor of Biological Sciences, and as many of you probably know, an incredibly fun and interesting speaker! First off, a big THANK YOU to everyone who came out to the IMAX event on Saturday! It was awesome seeing you, and I think we can all agree that the IMAX cinematography was incredible! Hope that we can take more people with us next time around!

Second, we are very excited to announce another milk and cookies session, this time with guest speaker Dr. Casey Donovan, who is the Chair of USC's Kinesiology Department! Here are the details of our meeting with Dr. Donovan this week:

Hey Phi Sigma Members!
We hope your break was restful and now you are ready to finish this semester strong!
To take a load off of this craziness, Phi Sigma invites you to attend a FREE IMAX movie and dinner this Saturday (3/26)!We will be meeting at 5pm to head over together to the California Science Center and watch "Hubble" 3-D (http://www.californiasciencecenter.org/Imax/Features/Hubble3D/Hubble3D.php). The movie will last from 5:30 p.m. to approximately 6:15 p.m., and will be followed by a free Subway dinner. Space is limited, so if you are interested in attending, please RSVP by email by Friday, Mar. 25, at 5:00 p.m.
Also, we are excited to announce an awesome research opportunity

Dr. Ite Laird of the USC Health Sciences Campus (HSC) researches lung cancer and is currently seeking a junior undergraduate researcher for her lab. She has emphasized that students will be considered on a first-come, first-evaluated basis, so please fill out this application and turn it in ASAP! Phi Sigma invites you to come hear USC's very own Dr. Donald Arnold present on "Visualizing synaptic structure in vivo." Dr. Arnold is an associate professor in the molecular biology department and received his Ph.D from Johns Hopkins University, so this is an excellent opportunity to not only network with fellow members of this prestigious Biological Sciences Honor Society, but also to learn more about Dr. Arnold's research and about research in general. Happy Week 3! Hope you all have settled in to classes without too much trouble, because we are excited to announce our first event of the semester:
a ROOT BEER FLOAT / election social!
Come join us THIS THURSDAY, 1/27, at 8pm (room ZHS 163) to make your own delicious root beer floats, meet and greet your fellow bio enthusiasts, and cast in your vote for Phi Sigma's new Publicity Chair this semester!

Help us recruit the Class of 2015!

The USC College Office of Admission is asking you to serve as an interviewer for this year's Trustee and Presidential Scholarship candidates.  The scholarship interviews will be conducted on the following days:
  • Friday, February 25
  • Tuesday, March 1
  • Friday, March 4
  • Tuesday, March 8
  • Friday, March 11
In order to participate, you must:
  • Either have a declared major in the USC College or be an undeclared major
  • Be available from 8:30AM-12PM on the interview date
  • Attend one training session on either Wednesday, February 9 or Tuesday, February 15 from 3:30-4:30PM, location TBA.

Study description: Male RAs are needed for help with laboratory study in a clinical health psychology laboratory. RA must have availability from 9-1 on Monday, 10-2 on Wednesday, or 10-2 on Friday. Please email contact personnel for more information.

Job Duties: RAs will assist with running subjects through a new laboratory based study and data entry.

Qualifications: Genuine interest in research opportunity in psychology lab, flexibility in schedule

Time commitment: 8-12 hours a week

Presentation: "Marine Microbiology at the Forefront of Environmental Research"
Dr. Caron will be speaking about his current research topics in marine biology, as well as the importance of doing research as an undergraduate. Free food will be provided again!!
